A recent survey discovered that Aussie business travellers get more homesick than global counterparts.

Aussies miss the comforts of home more than business travellers from the rest of the world according to new research by global workplace provider Regus.

Not surprisingly, family was the number one on the list of things business travellers said they miss most when working on the road, with 73 per cent of Australians agreeing to this statement compared to the global average of 68 per cent.

The research also found that in Aussie small businesses (less than 49 employees), staff are less willing to travel for work with 29% of respondents expressing hesitation, and saw a 9 per cent decrease in reluctance among workers in larger firms (more than 250 employees).

Open to travel

When narrowed down by industry, the study discovered that that healthcare and medicine professionals are the most open to business travel (62%), closely followed by those in the media and marketing industry (52%). The percentage was much lower in other industries dropping to 37% among ICT workers. Only 36% of staffers in banking, insurance and finance expressed interest in the opportunity of business travel should it be presented.

High-tech business 

Businesses should look at ways technology can help avoid business travel which can be physically and emotionally gruelling on employees says Paul Migliorini, CEO of Regus Australia and New Zealand:

“Luckily there is an increasing range of technology, from video conferencing to collaboration software, that enable businesses to avoid travel and help keep employees sleeping on their own pillows.”

The advantage of using video conferencing software is that it can also help lower business expenses, and at the same time help keep employees happy explains Migliorini.

“Overall, less travel is a win-win – businesses save big on costs, and workers get to enjoy their home cooked meals.”
