Learn how you can improve your iPhone or iPad's battery life by changing your iDevice settings.

iPhone Screens with extending battery life techniques

1. Turn off Background App Refresh

The one new feature of iOS 7 that takes the biggest toll on battery life is the Background App Refresh setting, which continually refreshes all open apps behind the scenes. To disable this feature go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh. You have the option of either turn off the feature entirely or just disabling apps individually.

2. Turning Off Location Tracking

Another battery guzzler are the apps that constantly track your location, which you can disable from Settings > Privacy > Location Services.

3. Automatic Updating

iOS 7 has a handy feature that automatically updates apps in the App store and automatically downloads music and book purchases to your device but it's also probably one of the last things you want running when you’re trying to get your iPhone battery through a full work day of use.

To turn it off go to Settings > iTunes and App Store.

4. Turn off Bluetooth and AirDrop

If you don't use AirDrop and only use Bluetooth in the car then it's definitely worth leaving these settings off for a noticeable boost in battery life (you can always manually switch Bluetooth on as and when you need it).

Swipe up from the bottom of the home screen to bring up Control Centre and hit the Bluetooth and AirDrop icons to disable these two functions.

5. Disable Spotlight Search indexing

Swiping down from the top of the home screen gives you access to a handy internal search feature called Spotlight, but the problem is that it is set to index every piece of content on your iDevice by default, including application data, messages, emails and contacts through to events, audiobooks, music podcasts and videos.

Every time it indexes new data, it takes a noticeable toll on your battery which is why we would recommend turning off indexing for data that you don't need to be searched.

To do this, go to Settings > General > Spotlight Search.

6. Decrease Screen Brightness

An obvious battery saver is to turn down the screen brightness of your device or alternatively activating the Auto-Brightness setting.

You can do this quickly by using Control Centre (swipe up from the bottom of the screen) or going to Settings > Wallpapers & Brightness.

7. Turn Siri Off

If you're like many iPhone users and don't use Apple's voice assistant Siri then you should turn her off altogether and save yourself some battery life. Go to Settings > Siri to do so.
