Highlights
  • Tow.com.au is a technology platform for maintaining large fleets of tow trucks across Australia.
  • Using mobility and embracing technology, Tow.com.au has followed in the footsteps of Uber and Airbnb to disrupt the industry.
  • In two years, town.com.au has taken around 2 per cent of the national market.

Now that we can work from almost anywhere, requiring employees and other workers to come into the office may be a far less productive way of getting things done.

Auttomatic, the company behind WordPress, closed its San Francisco offices because very few of their 550 employees ever went there. The company has always encouraged remote working – even going so far as to pay for coffees should employees choose to work from the nearest Starbucks.

If you plan on transforming an industry you need to be productive on the road.

With a workforce distributed across 45 countries, it’s not surprising that Automattic chose to focus on improving remote and mobile productivity instead of in-office processes and wired-in technologies.

With more and more companies experimenting with telecommuting and mobile workflows, we might eventually see the traditional office begin to shrink in size and – in some cases – become unnecessary altogether.

Of course, there are many challenges with working in this way: ensuring every member of the team stays in sync with everyone else; maintaining consistency and quality; collaborating to share their experience and skills; and building that camaraderie that can fuel the best teams. Yet there are many technologies and apps that are capable of transforming these challenges into opportunities: messenger apps like Slack or Yammer, collaborative software such as Microsoft Office 365, cloud-based file management services like Box or OneDrive.

And then there’s the challenge of organising work schedules, allocating tasks and monitoring productivity with field-based teams, without requiring employees to report in person to a central location.

The Smarter Business’ e-book – Managing Productivity with a Mobile Workforce – explores how mobile technology is disrupting one industry after another.

The tow truck industry is just one example of an industry that is being transformed. Queensland-based Tow.com.au has used mobile tech to create a very different business model capable of managing tow trucks across the entire state.
