"Camilla Franks says success comes from an unconventional mindset."

Two years ago, a health scare forced the workaholic kaftan queen to re-evaluate her drastically out-of-sync work-life balance. She and her team now do their best work in some very unusual ways.

1. All work and no play makes Camilla a potential statistic

When I got sick, it was terrifying. For years I’d been working myself into the ground because I didn’t have the luxury of a big team.

My body was telling me to stop. My nervous system was shot and I was completely emotionally, physically and mentally exhausted. I learned I was human and no longer Wonder Woman and that I needed to stop.

Looking back, I can see I was hiding behind my business. I’ve now learned how important it is to have balance. I still struggle with it, but I’m getting better. My dream is to find inner peace and balance to feel truly successful.

2. Forget the boardroom mentality and great ideas will flow

Everything at Camilla is about my tribe. I am the ringmaster, conductor and performer. But I’m only one person so, day to day, my angels are the faces of the business.

We plan, agree on the strategy, review, plan some more, and then review again. The planning might be in a teepee, or begin with a meditation or a downward dog [yoga pose], but it all makes for great ideas. I have an amazingly experienced and open-minded management team to help me achieve this. And I am definitely on a spiritual path – it’s what makes sense to me and gives everything I do meaning.

It’s about connecting to my true self, about love and authenticity; to show up and be real every day. I recently travelled to Africa for inspiration and it was life-changing. It solidified the importance of community, connection and love. We’re all born to connect – it’s how we’re built.

3. Feel the fear, believe in yourself and work hard

Look fear in the face. I learned pretty quickly that courage is not without fear. Steve Jobs said that only the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do. And I’ve got a company full of crazy people who constantly change and innovate.

My success is due to hard work, never taking ‘no’ for an answer and trusting my team and my gut. You have to believe in yourself, follow your dream and work hard. No-one else will do it for you. You have to travel, too, and get good people around you.

Accept your failures and your mistakes. Stay true to who you are and remain strong. Business is tough – running your own is even tougher – but there are lots of rewards.
